MPLS

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a mechanism in high-performance telecommunications networks which directs and carries data from one network node to the next making it easier to create "virtual links" between distant nodes. It can encapsulate packets of various network protocols.

MPLS consolidates all traffic types on a single network enabling you to prioritize voice, video and data applications. MPLS is a highly scalable, protocol agnostic, data-carrying mechanism which gives IP networks simple traffic engineering with the ability to transport Layer 3 (IP) VPNs with overlapping address spaces.
